just watch the temp of the tank, raise the light if the water gets hot. Start ar about 8" above

Are you talking with the bulbs 8" or the top of the canopy?

really it should be higher than that for the whole spectrum to pan out anything less than 12" makes the light basicaly put out laser beams into the water and end up cooking your corals...
I kept my coral at about 8" for over a year now

Mine are at aroun 10 right now but will be at 4-5" on the next tank.
