Hey everyone! I've dropped a hint or two about something I have been "working on", and said that the 40g project was on hold for a period of time. Well, we've gotten far enough along in the process to feel comfortable in telling everyone that...

We are buying a new house!

The new house is about twice the size of our current house, and in a better neighborhood. Jessica and I are really excited about what this means for our family.

Now, what does this mean for "the hobby"? Well, it means that once we close on the house, the 40g upgrade swings into high gear! I'll try to start a thread of all the things that will need to be done, some of which will include frags available for the club! And I know how much some of you love to tinker with a new tank set up, so I'll do my best to get everyone involved who is interested.

So I've been saying I'm going to be doing this for a very long time. My words were: In 10 years or so, figuring that was how long the FOWLR fish would live. Long story short, I can't wait. It's happened. I caught the SPS bug and gotta have it. Not 10 years from now, less than 10 months from now.

Here's the plan:
Step 1. Plan what I want.
I want to re-do my rock. I'm not pleased with it. It all just lays in a single layer on the bottom. I want a cave structure and a pyramid. I've also always wanted a school of anthias and a cleaner shrimp of some variety. LEDs will be a must. The cave structure will take up 1/2 the tank, LEDs will be on the other 1/2. Dusty (my hubby) has agreed to make these for me for my birthday this year (November).

Step 2. Sell the fish that won't work.
Jetsam (snowflake eel) - will knock over the rock work I want to do.
Flotsam (green wolf eel) - see above
Jerry (bird wrasse) - grabs sps and beats them against rocks. How do I know this? I put a dead bird's nest in the tank and that's exactly what he did. Also, he would eat the anthias and the shrimp.
Aku (lionfish) - would eat the anthias and the shrimp.
Hank (porcupine puffer) - after Jerry was done with the bird's nest, Hank picked it up and and chewed it into a dozen pieces. Not reef safe. Hank actually moved to a 40 gallon breeder. This tank is 18 inches wide (same as the 180g from the overflows to the front), 3 feet long, and 19 inches tall (Hank doesn't swim up and down much). It'll last him awhile. I may move him to something bigger as he grows, but for now he's happy in it.

Step 3. Purchase new fish.
I chose Maldives Anthias because I like the purple line on the females and the shininess of the males. I also chose a blood red fire shrimp because he's so bright and pretty.

Step 4. Rock Work.
I'm going to build a cave structure. I can't seem to find a picture of it outside Anthony Calfo's Coral Propagation book, but it's basically a big "C". I'll need to build a PVC structure, and drill my larger pieces of rock into smaller pieces and zip tie them over the pvc. I'm building this with 3/4 inch pipe. This will give me room to put my current T-5's on either side. I'll have lower light corals there. I'm looking forward to seeing my shrimp climb up the rock work. I'm also going to build a pyramid with numerous cave holes in front of the left overflow.

Step 5. Lights

Step 6. Corals

So... It's been a rough week. I worked from home on Monday because I was simply exhausted. Then I thought I had enough strength to install a storm door on the front of our house that night. Come Tuesday, I wasn't sure who or where I was when the alarm went off, but I powered through the day. This morning, I couldn't get out of bed, so I burned one of my sick days. I'm not sure what's going on, but it's not like me to be this exhausted for this length of time.

Once I got out of bed today, around 2pm, I had to force myself not to start on any projects, just to take it easy, and plan on an early night again. I'm hoping to be 100% tomorrow when I wake up for work, but I am a bit worried. I have no indicators of illness, but I am extremely exhausted - to the point of not being able to organize my thoughts for any length of time.

So now, with Spring here, I am looking to outdoor projects and activities, while trying to wrap up my indoor projects <cough> 40 breeder and then this happens. It's probably too early to be concerned, but if in a week I'm still feeling like this, I'm going to have to call the Dr. and get some blood work done.

Wish me luck SaltGeeks!

Well its late and I can't sleep thanks to endless stream of thoughts I have going on involving my fish tank. So here's the problem with the uncertain solution...my lease is up in April and really looking like I'm going to be moving. With that said my new location will not permit my 120g due to shear size, pretty confident it wouldn't even fit through the door there. So a downsize is imminent, my choices are narrowed down to either a 55g or a 40g breeder. Both are available used for a pretty fair price, but I can't decide.
If I did the 55g it would be out of shear convenience for just a simple trade over of contents. I would keep most of my current stock and equipment out of the 120g. Space would still be pretty tight due to its length, and I'm not a big fan of its shallow width. It is the cheaper option of the two and really convenient.
The 40B has become my ideal setup. Its foot print is ideal for the new home while still giving me ample interior tank space. My quirk with this tank is I want a very specific setup which in turn would cause me to completely start from scratch. The plus side of that is I would doing most everything DIY per my ideal standards. Second small issue is there are a few pieces of livestock I would want to remain inhabitants in my reef but where to house them until the project is done would be an issue.
So my quarrel is do I just get the 55g for convenience of the transfer or do I sell the livestock and hold out for the 40B?...

We will be doing a monthly frag raffle! One frag will be raffled off per month! We have various frags available, Monti Caps, Digitata, Various Acro frags, a few Zoas, and a few LPS here and there.

The reasons are two fold!

1.) Drive new membership!

2.) Save a reef!

The requirements!

1.) Refer 5 new members! When sign up they have an option to enter a "referrer". They need to fill this out in order for you to get credit for it. Your friends, co workers, uncle Joe, friends and associates from other local-ish forums. If they have a marine tank, refer them! If they forget, PM Eric (marinelife), he can manually add them so the system can track them.

2.) You, and the person you refer, must have 10 posts contributing to the forum. Useful posts please!

3.) You must post in the monthly raffle thread.

Monthly I will post a picture of the frag tank, and what is available. The winner gets his/her choice of anything in the tank within reason.

The only thing that is off grounds:

No Broodstock, if thats all I have, I am keeping it until it is a sustainable colony. Again, save a reef guys!

The first raffle is 12/01/09! The last day to enter is the first of each month, winner will be announced a day or so later.
