chromiumlux

Have a question for all the old timers. What would be the best waterproof paint to use for the inside of my stand? I figure since I am going to extremes here in my world that I would begin takin precautioary measures early on.

marinelife
03-24-2010, 12:00 PM
hmm, is it not already painted?

chromiumlux
03-24-2010, 12:02 PM
Yeah, do you think what it has will be okay? for splash and spills

marinelife
03-24-2010, 12:07 PM
well I would not overly spill but it should be ok for a few times

Aquatic Specialists
03-24-2010, 01:28 PM
Yeah, they are built for that. Something else you can do is line the inside with pond liner, (make it so water cannot get under it of course), but you can then dry it up with a towel instead of your wood absorbing it. I have used Rustoloeum in the past, but have also been worried about the fumes building up causing some sort of ph problem or somthing stupid like that...I am an excessive and projective "worrier" though.... :D

chromiumlux
03-24-2010, 01:30 PM
Good point

Sunshine
03-24-2010, 09:17 PM
We sealed ours with poly.

Sunshine
03-24-2010, 09:32 PM
Velspar is marine seal. And I AM from the stone age...... lol

jeremyreef
03-24-2010, 10:09 PM
yeah i would browse through some boating supplies, they might have a sticky liner of some sort and silicone it in. just a idea.

chromiumlux
03-24-2010, 10:12 PM

03-24-2010, 11:02 PM
just an idea, but maybe you could line the inside with frp and silicone the edges?? easy to cut and would have a clean look

chromiumlux
03-24-2010, 11:07 PM
Thanks for the idea jsharp. Now your'e dealin with an old timer here. what is FRP?

jsharp1
03-24-2010, 11:12 PM
frp= fiber reinforced paneling. its used in commercial kitchens. its about 1/16" thick waterproof board. u can get the waterproof trim strips too for the edges. lowes or home depot has them in 4'x8' sheets prob no more than $20.

jsharp1
03-24-2010, 11:13 PM
oh and its already finished so u wouldnt need to paint

chromiumlux
03-24-2010, 11:24 PM

O.K. I Have decided to move the tank this Saturday 5-29-10. I know this is short notice. So far I have Myself and Marinelife(Eric) lined up. Need at least two more people for this move. Please let me know if you can help and what time. Will need help only as long as it takes to move the tank in and get set in place.
I am aware many will have plans this weekend, need only a couple hours of your time. I will toss a cookout at my house at a later date after memorial holiday for everyone.
Thanks again

chromiumlux

OK!!!! Houston we have lift off
Took some minor tweeking to get the drain pipe the right length to eliminate the flushing effect. I have a stable water level in the overflow now. Thanks Eric for the insight and the link to the Durso flushing effect article.:e030:

The Mag12 is wide open and the flow looks like it is right going through the fuge right now. I may have to heighten the two drain pipes going into the 20g to eliminate some of the noise in the sump.
The overflow was noisy from the water flowing in around the cutout for the return loc-line. I took a bit of filter pad and wrapped under and around the opening. This helped quiet the overflow down tremendously.
Everything is looking good, no leaks---so I must have passed plumbing for idiots with large tanks..lol
I will replace the clamps on the return hose with the plastic style clamps later if needed.
Will need to tweek the water level so sump does not overflow in the event of a power outage....I may not be able to adjust this due to the style of the sump...I will keep you all posted on this.
Thanks to Justin at AQSP for the sump ideas, configuration of using two tanks for the sump and the drilling. Works great!:d028:

Tomorrow begins the couple of days needed to make water to fill this baby. Tomorrow is also Big Dad's day to relax and reflect on this build further. Will post pics tomorrow

Stick a piece of silicon tubing down the drain into the air-lock. It will pull out the air and keep it from gurgling. It takes some fine tunig, but this works great.

OK, new update. Mag 12 too strong for sump. Replaced with mag 9.5. 100% quieter. no flush from outpipes to 20g fuge any longer and no more chance of overflow as I was able to remove about 4 gallons of water from fuge. Tests ok when power is cut. water comes right below rim of 20g fuge no overflow danger. I may route the baffle plates with 1" teeth to afford a more comfortable safety margin. But for now, I am satisfied with the performance of the sump/fuge. I am figuring a loss of 100-120 gph with smaller pump. I can live with that as I will be implementing mp40s for flow in the DT. She's almost ready for saltwater.....wooohoooo!!!!

I would not notch the baffles. It will change the water level and create more bubbles.

I think he is gonna cut then down so the 20 does not hold as much water.

And what do you recommend :)
I think he is gonna cut then down so the 20 does not hold as much water.

I wouldn't do anything, if the water level is below the rim....where is the problem. The reason they are as tall as they are is for more sand bed and rock rubble.

marinelife
06-24-2010, 03:11 PM
Yeah that is what Andy was saying but it almost went over and that could be bad. He wants it lower so he can rest easy at night :)

He could put a check valve on the return and that will save him another gallon or two.

marinelife

He was thinking that, but sometimes those fail. I think he will be talking to you about it sometime.

chromiumlux
06-24-2010, 09:40 PM
Now dont you fellers get all worked up over my sump...lol
I am still deciding what I want to do. One decision is to shorten the pipes from the 29g to the 20g. I still get a flush there every 2-3 minutes from air trapped in pipes and this is producing excessive air bubbles which are being returned to DT. Another decision I am pondering is to trim 1/2" to 1" off baffles. This will not affect a DSB much if I decide to go that route. I am thinking about the check valve on the return, but will need to research the pros and cons. I have decided not to cut teeth in the baffles.
I let the tank sit overnight and water did come up almost to top rim. I am not comfortable with this right now to say the least. I want a dead-on set water level if the power goes out. I will be working these issues out over the weekend and I am open to any suggestions you more experienced reefers can offer me. I do like the design of this sump as it allows me easy access to every part of it. Let's hear those tried and true suggestions.

jeremyreef
06-24-2010, 11:52 PM
I ran a check valve on my system for 2 years with no problems. I just took it off a few days ago because I have never cleaned it before and it had kalk build up from the old days. I might replace it with a new one, but my sump is big enough to hold all of the overflow as is. A check valve will definitely help with the back flow for now.

chromiumlux
06-25-2010, 09:46 AM
Thanks Jeremy. I was going to look into this. Does this check valve reduce flow?

jeremyreef
06-25-2010, 11:52 AM
Does this check valve reduce flow?

They might a little bit, but I did not notice any difference just feeling the output with my hand.

Aquatic Specialists
06-25-2010, 01:36 PM
I use check valves on some of my systems. They make different ones other than the ones you would buy at Lowes:

http://www.marinedepot.com/True_Union_Swing_Check_Valve_FPT_x_FPT_True_Union_ Swing_Check_Valves-Spears-FT9244-FIFTVLTC-vi.html

I can get these compariable to these prices in 1/2", 3/4", 1", white or clear. No metals. If you was to put this as close to the pump as possible, that would save you a lot of water.

I would cut down the exstention on the pipes that are overflowing into the second tank. The cheato, sand, and rubble will help stop the bubbles too.

ghurlag
06-26-2010, 06:48 PM
These check valves look like something I'll be interested in down the road (equipment improvements have come to a screeching halt with no disposable income).

Andy, I think you will be really happy with the way this turns out. You're working hard, doing your homework, and I think many of us will be jealous of the rewards

I'm already jealous :(

I made a couple--if not 100--adjustments to my sump. I am very pleased with the outcome.
First, I removed 1.5" off the baffles to lower water levels in overall system. This resulted in no need for check valve(s) at the return pump. I let the tank drain completely overnight and have approx 1-2 inches from the rim. I had removed 1 gallon for safe measure as it drained and added it back to the sump today after work. I will no longer have to worry about anoverflowing tank if there is a loss of electricity....plus still have plenty of water height for a fuge when needed...plus, not have to worry about a stuck or faulty check valve. I chose not to incorporate one on my system.
Second, I modified all of the overflow pipes to minimize noise as water drains from the tank. The two pipes you see pictured that come out of the 29g and flow into the 20g were the toughest adjustments to make. It seemed that every configuration I tried resulted in one or both pipes "flushing" as they pulled air in from the bulkheads in the side of the 29g. The trick was getting the water level to remain above the bulkheads while in operation. the pic shows how the pipes had to be adjusted in the sump to releive the gurgle and flush.
I am very happy with the way this sump turned out and many thanks to Eric(marinelife) for bearing with me through the seemingly endless questions I had. Also thanks to Justin at AQSP for the advice and support as well.
This was an unusual sump build to say the least. I learned a lot in the dynamics of waterflow during the past few weeks. It may look simple, but turn one pipe a little and it throws off the whole system. It was challenging, fun, and frustrating at times.
So, as I write this, the tank is draining. I will be cleaning out all residues and will dry completely before running the DI line to it for what may take 2-3 days to fill. More to come.....

Well, a quick update. I mixed a 200g mix of ESV salts into the tank yesterday. This tank I am estimating to be a total of 180-190 gallons with sump. ESV mixed up clear even though the salinity was 55ppt. I am in the process of bringing the salinity level down to 35ppt. So far I have removed about 20 gallons from the tank and replaced with rodi. Last reading was 39ppt. I will see what it is in the morning. Should be good. So I have 20g of ESV water that will probably yield 30-35 gallons after re-mix with di water. This will be used on the 14g to do 100% change. I will document this also in the salt thread.

I will be adding sand to the tank and auqascaping this weekend. What I am looking to acheive is a more open structure with a lot of shelf area for SPS and LPS. I will be using some of the rock from my 30g to seed the system. I will post up pics as this progresses over the weekend.
Planning to light this tank with LEDs. Have seen a lot of nice fixtures online. I will opt to build my own setup and configuration. This is going to be a challenge as I will not be installing a hood over this tank. So, I will need to come up with some type of support system other than the ceiling. Suggestions are welcome.

Hooked up the new MP40 tonight. Wow what a difference these pumps make! It immediatley picked up all the detritus from the sand bed and kept it suspended in the water column. All the corals seem to have perked up a bit and the acans are as big and fluffy as they were in the 30g.

Well, This is what I am thinking about for LEDs for the 150.

Suggestion from Bill at Reef LED Lights. "Start with two 48 Deluxe Kits. Use a 1:1 Blue:White and 80 degree optics then add 12-24 XPG and 24 Royal Blue. The XPG would be on for 3-6 hours and the Blue would be on for 16-20 hours for a night/moon light. Evenly space these without optics to get even coverage. The Royal Blue will give you a 17K look. Use 2x 30" x 8.46" sinks".
