Just found out that this is a majano anemone. I heard you can use boiling water to get rid of these? has anyone used this method before? Just wondering if I have to try and inject them (I have 4 of these) or do I just try to squirt it on the top of it? These were the first things that I bought and were told they were star polyps. lol, I'm a noob, what can I say. Well I figured out they weren't about an hour after I brought them home and put them in my tank, but I thought they were pretty anyways so I thought I would keep em. Just found out today what they were and that I need to get rid of them asap cause they spread pretty fast. Thanks, Jen

Go to Aquatic Specialist and get some Pepperment Shrimp he has on sale right now and they will eat them. Boiling water never worked for me. I have tried all chemical methods and the best for me was an Emperor Angel!

thanks, I'll try that. BTW, I've been to Aquatic Specialists a couple of times and just went and checked out Coral Ranch today. Both are really great places. The guy at Coral Ranch gave me the ID on the majano. Lol, it's kinda funny cause I was thinkin bout buying a peppermint at Aquatic Specialists yesterday, but Justin told me that they are good to have if I had aiptasia or some kind of pest, so I didn't get one. Knew there was a reason I wanted one! Anyways, I will let you guys know how it goes.

Yeah both are great places and I am glad we have them near us.

The pepperments will help I am sure!

if the rock they are on can be taken out i would remove it outside of the tank with a razor blade and shake the rock off in a tub of saltwater before putting it back.

My method works sometimes.

Get a bag of Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime at Krogers. Put two table spoons of water, and two table spoons of the lime in a cup. Microwave it until it just start to boil. The use a dropper to smother them. Make sure you turn off all pumps, and power heads. Let it sit for a few minutes, and don't get it on anything else. It will bleach the rocks it touches, and kill anything it touches.

How much you can use at once depends on your tank size. I use very little at a time. Too much will raise your Ph.

I would try the Mrs. wages I have never gotten the peppermints to eat majonos, some one else may have better luck with peppermints and majonos though.

What I would like to know is "WHO" sold that to you as star polyps?? I would remove that rock and take it back to whoever sold it to you. You got to remember this, just because you can only see a couple right now doesn't mean there are more in that rock ready to explode into view. And that's exactly what will happen. I say pitch it all together.

Yea, I should've taken the rocks back to the store, but it's too late. i went ahead and threw both rocks out just to be safe side. I thought about the possiblity that there could be more and the rocks that I threw out were the ones that they came on when I got them from the lfs, so I thnk I might be ok. Oh yea, it was Jack's Aquarium in Beavercreek and they had quite a few of these in their tank. I'll prob call and let em know what they sold me.

You could just dry the rock out and use it later!

hey now lol i work at jacks, but i also know what a manjano looks like and would make sure you knew what you were buying. I have had luck with aiptaisia-x, but something that bad i would of moved to the quarentine and fixed it up before trying to sell it.

i use pickling lime and an insulin syringe on mine, it has a tiny guage needle and if you mix the pickling lime with warm water, it will dilute better. gotta be fast, stick in right down the center and hit the plunger. kills them every time. i think they don't feel it so much at first because the needle is so small so they don't retract as fast. you don't need to use a lot, i can kill up to 5 with just one syringe full easily.

I guess if you're gonna go that route, use Liberty Medical. There good people. They'll help you end an aptaisia's life :D

I am trying the Kalkwasser approach. Is it possible to over do it use too much at one time? There is a huge overgrowth of Manjano in this reef and requires a lot of Kalk. Any dosing info would be handy before I destroy this reef with accidental overdose.

Thanks

I mixed 2 teaspoons water, with two teaspoons kalk. Stir well, and boil in the microwave for 10 seconds or so. What ever you mix it in needs rinsed as soon as you are done, or it will never come off. Use it right away with a larger needle and smother them. The Kalk paste doesn't dissolve in the water, and you will have to suck it out later. Anything it touches is toast.

Yes you can overdose with Kalk so I would be careful

Guess I should have been more specific :P

My dosage was for a 120 with a 30G sump. Keep an eye on your alk, CA, and PH closely if you use this method.
