View Full Version : Esh's 20 Long build

Going to be setting up a 20 long for the bedroom. Cant wait for it to put me to sleep. LOL :D
List of items I have so far.
20L tank
20H sump
Stand (started building today)
3 - 3/4 Bulkheads and glass bit for drilling
Several old small rio pumps (200, 600, 800) to use for in-tank flow.
Kent Marine RO/DI filter (have to get new filters)
Dry sand
Things I still have to buy.
Leds from RapidLED
Return pump (thinking about getting a Magdrive)
Dry Rock
RO/DI Filters And TDS meter
Black Acrylic (for overflow)
Plumbing items (using 3/4 for overflow and probably 1/2 for return, what ever pump uses)
ATO container
Test Kits
I will be DIYing the Tank drilling, bean animal overflow, stand, led lights, ATO, filter socks and sump.
I plan on doing beananimal from a corner overflow. Not going to do coast to coast since the tank is only 12 inches front to back. I dont want to cover 3 to 4 inches of that with a coast to coast, want as much light coverage as possible. The sump will have two cambers with bubble trap between them. The first camber will be filter socks and settling area. Second camber return pump. I dont plan on using a skimmer since a 5 gal water change per week will be about 20% of volume. But if I find I need one later there will be room in first chamber for one. Plan on using pressure fed ATO. Since I am using a bean overflow I figure that the water should not be able to be pumped out below fill level due to overflow blockage (it would have to get blocked three times).
Time for a smoke and put away tools from starting the stand. Will post pick of stand progress a little later. Any advise or comments on my lists or plan are welcome .

So heres the start of my 20L tank stand.
This shows half lap on bottom of frame

Here is the top and bottom of frame glued and screwed. BTW that square is my best friend

I got about 50% of the panels and door milled up as well. Had to stop working on it due to daughter aggro LOL! Hoping to be able to work on it some more tomorrow and get the door and panels glued up. Then start the hood.

Here is the 75 stand and hood I built. All the moldings ect. I did with a rotor and table saw from about 75 board foot of Ambrosia Maple. The 75 build is on hold till I get the funds to finish it. Thats why I am doing a 20L till then.

Are you going to skin the 20 long stand?
From one woodworker to another nice job on the stand, very nice!
Eshyr
01-08-2012, 07:06 PM
Yes I am going to skin the 20L stand. Going to use oak. But I have to paint it :frown: because the oak was given to me by a friend and it has glue all over one side and some stain on the other. I really dont think I can get it clean enough use unpainted (though I would prefer it that way). The 20L stand isnt going to be as fancy as the 75 but it should look nice. I have about 50% of the "skin" mill up already.
Thank you for the compliment!

Not trying to Hijack but did you make those bar clamps? They look like they could possibly have been DIY'd out of some unistrut.
Eshyr
01-09-2012, 07:58 PM
Yep thats what they are. I needed some heavy duty long clamps that were straight. I couldnt see paying the price for 5 foot cabinet clamps so I made 4 of those. I love them. Makes glue ups like that real easy and solid.

I need a freestanding 3-sided stand cover for my metal stand, and a canopy. Your detail work on the 75 stand and canopy are what I have been picturing.

Going to be putting it in the bedroom after I get it painted just had to bring it up to living room to see how it looked with tank and sump in :). Next on list is to go to lowes or HD and get some measurements on the plumbing parts for bean overflow so I know where to drill holes.

I just used spray paint for one tank. I also roller on paint to the back of my old 180. It was water based I think. I just went to Lowes and had them mix me up some nice blue/greenish color

Ok got a question. I drilled the holes from the outside, soooooo there was some chipping on the second hole on the inside (red around it in pic). I was going to put the flange and gasket on the inside of the tank, but if I do the gasket does not cover the chip completely. My question is can I install the buklhead with the flang and gasket on the outside of tank where there isnt any chips? If not I could always put a small bead of silicone around the flange on the inside.

How deep is the chip? I know that Ghurlag chipped his 40 breeder and it sealed fine. Maybe he will pipe in his experience. Everything is looking fabulous!
Eshyr
01-12-2012, 04:30 PM
The chip is not very deep. At the edge of hole maybe 1/64 inch deep then gets smaller as it goes out. I might be able to tighten the bulkhead enough to get the gasket smashed into the chip but I dont want to break the glass cranking down on the bulkhead nut LOL.

Yeah, you gotta be careful with that no doubt.

My glass scalloped on the outside. If you put the flange on the inside, I would make sure to use teflon tape around the threads, and then run a bead of silicone around the outside of the plastic nut. I have some slow leakage from my bulkheads, and they are torqued down pretty good. I'm going to revisiting them with silicone and teflon tape in a few weeks. You could try putting the flange on the inside. That might work out pretty well...
At least if you do screw up the 20 gallon, it'll be easy to replace. A good size to "cut" your teeth on. I gambled with my 40 gallon. I was fortunate and didn't have any show stoppers, but man...
Eshyr
01-12-2012, 06:17 PM
Did some googlin on the bulkhead thing and like normal there are a ton of opinions on the whole thing so I think I will try with flanges/gaskets on outside. Tomorrow I will pick up some 3/4 plumbing stuff and get a water test on the tank. Oh I better get the dividers in the sump first LOL!

I would guess you will be fine with the small chip either way, but it doesn't hurt to try and of the mentioned fixes for added piece of mind. Nice to have a face with a name!
marinelife
01-12-2012, 10:20 PM
Usually you get a chip when drilling, if the bulkhead covers it you should be ok.
Eshyr
01-12-2012, 11:15 PM
The bulkhead doesnt cover the chip on the middle hole so thats why I am going to give putting the flange on the outside a try. Muttley000, thats my real face LOL but only my gaming/online name :). Roger is the name.

If all else fails on the chip, I've seen people patch over a chip with plexiglass. Just silicon or epoxy plexiglass that is slightly larger than the bulkhead or flange, drill out the plexi and mount their bulkheads to that. It's not the prettiest of options for a dsiplay tank, but it is water-tight for a sump...

I am considering using 2 55 watt power compact bulbs over the 20 long till I can afford to go with DIY leds. I already own a few power compacts from the past. I will have to get new bulbs but that would only be about 30 bucks. I can DIY an old reflector and the bulbs into the canopy. My only concern is heat ( I will not be running a chiller and have no plans to). I planned on putting a fan and vent into the back of the canopy for the leds but the PC;s put off more heat than the leds will. What do you all think? Are the PC's going to put off to much heat over a 20L?

I want to say thank you to Dogfytr for the p/c bulb and parts! I tryed it out in my 20 canopy and it just didnt seem to cover the whole tank so I got to thinking this thing would be perfect for a fuge. So I am going to use it over the sump/fuge. I installed a pair of 55w p/c's that I had and they seem work pretty good. Also got the baffles in the sump done.

From the color in the picture that looks like pressure treated plywood. If it is be sure to get a few good coats of paint or urethane to seal it, you don't want condensation that has been in contact with that wood in your tank. Besides a glossy white will reflect the light much better! Sump looks real good!

The back of the canopy is plywood. The sides and front are oak, top is maple. I am not sure if it is treated or not. I do know what treated looks like its just real old plywood. Got it out of my grandpas barn about 15 years ago :). Anyway I do plan on priming and painting the whole thing. Like you mentioned gloss white in the canopy and some kinda brown on the outside. Thank you Carrie!

Here are some pics and info on whats up with the 20L.
After getting the suggestion to silicone a piece over the holes with chips I thought it would be a good idea. Not only will it provide a better seal it will also help strengthen the drilled area. So here is the pile of broken glass (4 tries) and finally the acrylic cover plate. I gave up on trying to drill that small of a piece of glass. The second pic is the plate installed. I am glad I did it this way, cuz it worked prefect! No leaks!

This is the overflow box glue up and install. I cut the notches about a 1/4 inch lower than the bottom of top frame of aquarium and crossed my figures. Water level ended up just right, about 1/4 above the bottom of top frame.....YEAH!!!

This is the beananimal overflow plumbing and the under tank plumbing. I went with clear hose on the far right dorso style drain so that I could see how much water was flowing threw it letting me tune the full siphon.

Here is the room full of primed tank stand and painted back of tank. I used black gloss Krylon Fusion piant.

Here is a video of the Beananimal overflow running. Took a little while to figure out how to get it tuned and restarting, but I got it. Dead silent! All you can hear is the hum of the Mag5 pump.

Ok, finally got around to getting some pics together to share. So here goes.
Tank and live rock. The white rock is from Coral Cove, The darker rock is lace rock from Gerbers and the purple rock is a live one from Gerbers. I also got 2 pounds live sand from them as well. As of now for circulation in the tank there is the Mag 5 return and a little pump that you cant see behind the live rock by the overflow pointing to the right, to keep it clean behind the rock. I think the flow on that pump is around 120 gph.

This is the pressure fed ATO unit I built. It has a sloping bottom in case I want to dose Kalk. It holds 3 gallons and from the look of it 3 gallons should last about 1.5 to 2 weeks for top off. :)

I have also added this to my ro/di unit. The pressure from the tap is 110 psi. the pressure after prefilters is 100 psi. The Filmtec membrane is good up to 300 psi. (Found info for that on thier website.)

I had it set to come on at 7 tonight and it did. You can set 10 different timers for any day of the week or just week days or week ends, between the two channels. It has a on board battery so when you unplug it it doesnt lose settings or time. Also has two usb ports which i will be using for moon lights.
