So a month or so ago I asked a question about acrylic for overflow boxes. I have since decided to use black ABS. Does anyone here have experience welding this stuff with solvent. Can I get away with acetone or MEK, or should I pay for the weldon procuct that they recommend?
TIA
Matt

Seems like most people use weld-on.

I don't really know the answer to this, put if you're building something that transfers water out of the tank, I'd want it built right lol

Definitely use an ABS welding solvent.

I built a sump from plexiglass years ago and used the weld on that the guy gave me in the shop that i got the plexi from. Works real good and pretty neat to see it melt the stuff together. I used a syringe to apply the solvent between the pieces. Most important thing is to make sure your cuts are smooth and square. I use a hand plane over the edge after I cut it on the table saw. I am getting ready to do a black overflow in the 20L. Where did you get your ABS from? How much was it? What sizes did they have? And is it 1/4 inch?

I ended up using a weldon product, 4032 I believe. It worked great, the only problem I had was that when I preassembled one of the smaller pieces that is the side of my box, it melted in a little more than I wanted. I ended up with a .010" gap for about a half inch along the bottom. I melted a few chips form the table saw in some solvent and sealed the gap easily. This box was a practice box, but I am glad it came out useable. I bought a 1/4" thick piece that was 47" by 60" for 75 bucks from Alro Plastics in Jackson, Michigan. They deliver every day to where I work so I didn't have to pay shipping. I have 6 more to make, I'll try to get some pictures of the process and post them here.
