View Full Version : Taking Pics Under LEDs

I was curious how others might take pictures under their LED lit tanks. I know from personal experience, at least with my camera, it can be a little tricky to get accurate colors. For example, I have yet been able to get a picture of my branching hammer and show its colors accurately. Yet I can get pictures of my fish no problem.

I have experimented with manually setting the white balance, and many many different AUTO modes, but have yet to find a setting that gives me consistent results.

This can all be subjective to the camera also, I don't have a DSLR, just a nice point and shoot with some manual functions.

Most of the time you have to use photoshop or other program to adjust the colors. The camera does not like the blue leds

I have an old version of Photoshop laying around somewhere. Do you know of any other, less cost prohibitive programs? :pirate:

Two of my favorites are GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/)and Paint.net (http://www.getpaint.net/)

They both have plenty of features for the beginner and advanced photographer. Nothing is a replacement for a quality camera and good shooting technique, but I am no professional so I need all the help I can get as well.

+1 on GIMP and Paint.net. GIMP is like photoshop, but a little less user-friendly. It's EXTREMELY powerful once you learn how to use it though. And there are lots of little tutorials here and there.

Oh, and Jason, step 1 is to make sure the lens cap isn't on, and step 2 is to make sure your finger isn't in front of the lens :D
