Wow, I'll have to keep an eye out for those frag racks at the next swap. Andy, you and I need to work something out on some of those chalices you got from Jeremy. I like!

What does it take to keep a Chalice?

It really does not take much effort or skill to keep chalices. They do prefer lower lighting, but I have found them to adapt to higher par lighting over time. Some chalices will accept regular feedings of small meaty flesh such as mysis shrimp, chopped silversides, and cyclopeeze. A couple of the specimens I have will not accept hand feedings and seem to derive what they need from the water column. All chalices are aggresive. Some are extremely agressive. So it is best to keep them a good distance from other corals. Chalices will usually win the battle even amongst themselves. I have witnessed several of mine produce long strands usually frome the base or outer edge that stretch for several inches towards other corals. They will digest a coral at the point of contact and retract the digested flesh into themselves. It seems however if kept fed regularly they do not pose too much threat. My chalices have gone through a long acclimation period to the LED lighting I installed and all are doing great. Like any other coral, chalices will let you know where they want to be in the tank so start low and observe for several weeks, then move up a bit and watch how they react. My suggestion is to mount them to seperate small flat rocks if possible so when they grow out it is easier to move or frag them. Most chalices prefer a good med-strong random flow of water. The growth pattern is what suggests this type of flow and placement in the tank. Chalices can endure poor water conditions for considerable amounts of time, but this is not suggested as we all know prime water conditions are preferred in our aquariums. They are very adaptable and forgiving corals and usually add nice splashes of color to our tanks. Chalices are easily fraggable and usually heal very quickly. Some grow slow, others grow like crazy requiring regular pruning. I have to say that these are my #1 favorite corals. If you are in doubt with keeping chalices hit me up on the forum or come by and I can explain more.
