Just wondering what point bio-balls serve?

Nothing in a reef usually but trouble. For fish only they provide surface area for the growth of nitrifying bacteria for tank filtration and help produce turbulence, aiding in the gas-exchange process.

^ depends who you ask i really dont have a preference since i have never used bio balls but when it comes to surface area, bio balls kicks LR rubble's butt so when it comes to wanting the good bacteria the more surface area you have the better, so i would figure that in a fish only setup bioballs wouldnt be a bad way to go JMO. I have heard people go back and forth on the subject fr some time and it always came down to whatever you find works best for you. and really that goes for just about anything in this hobby.

Well, are the ones for free cat toys or actual bio-balls?
marinelife

The cat would get actual bio-balls to play with instead of using them in the filter system.

The tank set up that I just got is for reef and it has bioballs plus rubble rock. Q. should I forgo the bio bs? and what kind of trouble do they cause?

I would remove them unless you are going to clean them often.
nitrates can be high using them.

Thank you 4 ur imput. I really appreciate it. I'll not put them (bioballs) in and use something else there instead. I'm not sure that part is under water. want to water test it first outside. If it is not below the water line should I still use rubble rock? Again thanks
