Ok so I have an Iwaki 40RLXT for my turn and since removing my chiller the water level in the tank is higher making the wave boxes not work as well so I have to close a valve on the output to slow it down. This is wasting electric and a good pump.

So what good energy rated pump would be a good replacement. Has to be external. This is a few month out as I need to make sure I do not need the chiller anymore.

How much are you looking to pump? The 40RLXT does about 1100GPH right?

1200GPH I think, Not sure maybe 700GPH or 800GPH

Was curious as to what pump you ended up getting. I'm not sure about the Iwaki, but valving back these large pumps usually lets them draw less wattage, therefore they are a bit cheaper to run that way. I myself just picked up a Reeflo Barracuda for a good price, and plan to drive the entire tank from it, skimmer, fuge, as well as return, and should still have enough flow to throttle it back to keep it around 180 watts.....that's the plan anyway. We'll see if it actually works out that way.

Alot of people run the expensive pump I've had great luck with mag drive pumps insump and out i run a mag 12 in the summer with the chiller and a mag 9.5 in the winter. You could also add more plumbing to reduce head height.

I still have the same one, I cut the teeth on the overflow the get the water level to the level I needed, which let me open the valve all the way.

In the past I used Mag pumps but prefer to have an external pump.
